I have had a passion for radio since the age of 14, when I sent a demo tape
to Radio Caroline; only to be turned down because I was too young. I had also sent a tape to Derek Chinnery at BBC Radio 1, who was Emperor Rosko’s producer, but after a lot of calls and letters to see if it had been listened to I was told that unfortunately it had been lost, but would I like to come to Radio 1 and do it live? When I got there it was amazing to see that they were still using Gates turn tables and vinyl, and I had Alan Freeman on one side of me and the sound engineers one the other. I then broke into Hospital Radio and R. A. F. Radio at the age of fifteen. After working on mobile discos, I became the Resident DJ at the Top Rank Suite in Reading, and I also worked in the early days of the town’s new commercial radio station, Radio 210. I recorded shows in London’s Hertford street for Radio Luxembourg and had a daily show on Radio Bahrain in the Middle East for 14 months, and then came back home to Top Rank – not as a DJ but as Area promotions Manager based in Sheffield looking after eight night clubs. Later I returned to Reading to do the same job here. I was offered the London area next, from where I managed to fit in presenting on quite a few Radio stations, including the early schedules on Kick FM in Newbury, then on to Kestrel FM in Basingstoke. Other radio stations I worked on were Express Radio Newcastle, Crown FM in Norwich and Reading, Ridge FM in Abingdon and Easy Radio London. There could be more - it was a long time ago! I then moved on to television and joined Thames Valley T V as station Manager and presenter and spent four challenging years there. In 2001 I was asked by Reading College to put together a student radio station to be run to profession standards, including preparing the application to the Radio Authority for the on-air AM licence. My task was also to develop the on-air sound of the station and I brought in professional equipment and sourced and nurtured new talent. Blast1386 went on to receive a Sony Award and eight Internet Radio awards, and ten of my student presenters went on to full-time positions in the Industry. The studios were used by B. B. C. 6 Music to broadcast their Breakfast Show live with Phill Jupitus, who expressed on air his admiration for the facilities we had at the College. Resulting from a take-over of Reading College by the Slough/Ealing campus of Thames Valley University, my position was axed and I left after four great years and moved for the summer season to Zakynthos in Greece to present the breakfast show on Island FM for six months which I have now done for two seasons now , I retuned back to the Uk End Nov 2007 started work for Time106.6 in Slough where I and now presenting the late show Mon-Fri 10-1 pm as Sam Jackson name given to me by the station and i stayed there
until the second week of June2008 then returned back to Island fm in Zakynthos Greece where i now present
the breakfast show Mon - Fri 9 to 12 .

Programme Format: Contemporary and All-Time-Favourite love songs covering most music genres including current chart pop, classic ballads, soul ballads, and contemporary rock ballads such as Everything I Do by Bryan Adams. Each hour has three carefully prepared features that comply with the “love fantasy” attraction of the show, listeners are treated to a track from a contemporary new chart album, often as a pre-release exclusive, there is a celebrity soundbite which is no longer than 30” featuring an A-List Hollywood celebrity or a contemporary chart star, recent celebs include Justin Timberlake, KT Tunstall, Gwen Stefani, Beyonce, Daniel Craig (new James Bond), and Tom Cruise. The show also features an uninterrupted 4-song sequence each hour, The Love Show 4-Play. Demographics: The Love Show is designed as a catch-all programme with wide appeal, and popular with young females.

“It all started in 2004 when a good friend of mine who ran a satellite radio station in the UK dared me to put together a love show for him. At first I thought that the love show was a done and dusted thing, that all stations did a love show already and what could I do that wasn’t already being done. So I decided that a love show was only worth doing if it was going to be different to the ordinary, drab love show with the “Jenny loves Mike” dedications. It would need to sparkle, and have added attractions instead of relying only on the love songs. So I researched the target listener. The listener is obsessed with the cult of celebrity, magazines containing celebrity features are flying off the shelf and so a love show had to have a celebrity feature, and I subscribed, at my own cost to a Hollywood company who supplies me weekly with the latest celebrity sound bites. Non-intrusive 20 and 30 second bites that allows the celebs to appear on the show but who don’t hog the thing for more than a few seconds, it’s a perfect way to add sparkle to an up-to-date love show. Then the music for a contemporary love show must surely not all be tired old ballads I thought. The entire spectrum of pop is packed with love songs, soul dance records, soft rock songs, so many classics that are intrinsically love songs and missed totally by love shows, I researched the love song compilation albums and discovered that it was not all tired old ballads, there were soft rock love compilations, pop diva love albums and so on – radio was very out of touch with knowing which ‘love songs’ their listeners were buying! I then set about packaging the show up with some glossy imaging and recruited the services of a couple of the most beautiful voices around, including the lovely English voice talent Lynsey Frost (a BBC TV producer by day and a very close friend!), and Piers Gibbon, a well-known voice talent and TV documentary presenter. For me, The Love Show is a beautifully produced work of art, I feel like I’m making a movie or a record every week, production values have to be at their highest for me, and the result is a polished production, with a highly professional presentation. I come to this with 15 years experience as a radio presenter in all formats, and I’m not ashamed to say that this is in itself an advantage and a bonus for The Love Show.”

1980s era of “Funk, Soul and Disco”. Demographics: Disco Nights is designed as
a party mood-maker for all ages.

“For me, my DJ-ing days began in the 1980s, working the wheels-of-steel in trendy night spots in London Town such as Hamilton’s on the 7th floor of the Intercontinental Hotel Park Lane in London. I had a very expensive curly perm and I wore a white tuxedo and bow tie and the crowd was the jet-set elite who compared Hamilton’s with New York’s and Sydney’s finest clubs venues .. you could say I started at the top and worked my way down into radio! I wore a head-mic years before Madonna thought of it and the music was funky and loud, and we partied to Shalamar, Michael Jackson, Kool & The Gang and D-Train til 3am every night. The strobe lights and mirror balls glistened on the sequins of the dancers’ jackets and platform shoes (and that was just the guys!). The records were wild and funky and salsa-spiced, and an exciting new electro sound wowed everyone. Everyone knew all the songs, they were happy songs – people were happy. And the DJ would get on the microphone now and then and rouse the “party-people to get-down-and-boogie” and they went wild.

“With Disco Nights I’m reviving the 70s and 80s disco party, but gone the cheesy DJ quips and enter short, informative documentary-style bits about the artists and songs of the era .. the influential producers like the mighty Quincy Jones, and the Disco icons.

“On Disco Nights, the music naturally reigns supreme, and that’s where the focus lies. The spoken link bits are short but informative not throwaway aimless DJ-ing. Like The Love Show, the “cheese” is at an absolute minimum .. except when lyrics like “Get down, boogie-oogie-oogie” really get you giggling and you just can’t stop yourself.

“The linking throughout the show is tight and on-beat. Bright, fun and sparkly Disco Nights jingles add sparkle, and a non-stop mix sequence makes today’s DJ-Hyper realise he was born in the wrong time .. and didn’t invent mixing on his computer after all.

Caribbean and the Meditterain

I'd like to introduce myself - my name is Bob Goertz, and you may have seen a feature about me in the Radio Magazine.

Over the last four and half years I set up and ran the unique LPAM Student radio station Blast 1386 for Reading College and I now feel that it's time for a change.

With the growing strength of Community Radio in the UK there are lots of new stations starting up from scratch and it's already becoming painfully clear that some may not have all the skills and experience to achieve the success that they deserve.

With more than 40 years of broadcasting behind me, and having put together and run stations very similar in concept and funding to current Community Radio projects, I feel that I have the kind of experience that you may need in your own project.

I am offering my services along with several other well-qualified and experienced radio professionals in small targeted seminars and on-site consultations specifically designed to cover the very specialised needs of Community Radio.
